Emanuel Swedenborg

Emanuel Swedenborg (1688–1772), a truly remarkable visionary, began his career as a Swedish mining official and member of parliament and became well known throughout Europe as a scientist and prolific writer on scientific and philosophical subjects. After a series of profound religious experiences during midlife, he devoted the remaining twenty-seven years of his life to being a Aservant of the Lord@ and wrote energetically to communicate a spiritual vision of reality. Since then, the rigid theologies of the eighteenth century have steadily yielded, and the foresighted lucidity of his perspective has gained widening recognition. The fresh and contemporary appeal of Swedenborg's insights arises from the respect he showed for all religious faiths that stress a useful and loving life.

Emanuel Swedenborg: Essential Readings, by Emanuel Swedenborg and Michael Stanley (Editor). Best known for his focus on the intuitive force within, Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) also anticipated major modern discoveries in mineralogy, psychology, and anatomy. In this succinct and readable collection, Stanley expertly brings the most significant writings from Swedenborg's oeuvre together, showing readers a man who created a "hieroglyphic" language, reimagined the Genesis story, influenced Blake, Balzac, Strindberg, and Yeats, and authored a number of anonymous works that put the Swedish clergy of his day on high alert. This is the fourth title in the Western Esoteric Masters series from North Atlantic Books.

Conversations With Angels: What Swedenborg Heard in Heaven, by Emanuel Swedenborg, Leonard Fox (Editor), Donald L. Rose (Editor), David F. Gladish, Jonathan Rose (Translator), David Gladish (Translator). Emanuel Swedenborg was an 18th century scientist, statesman and visionary. Conversations With Angels: What Swedenborg Heard In Heaven is a compilation of his angelic encounters. Throughout the final 27 years of his life, Swedenborg explored the realms of heaven and hell and spoke with angels about the nature of life after death, discussed with newly arrived spirits their misconceptions bout the afterlife, and debated with devils or spirits from hell. As an Enlightenment scholar, Swedenborg recorded these encounters, attesting to God's will that humanity might know the truth of eternal life. The narratives in Conversations With Angels are ably translated by Swedenborgian scholars David Gladish and Jonathan Rose, and have been selected from three of Swedenborg's works, Conjugal Love, Apocalypse Revealed, and True Christian Religion, and have been arranged by theme. Swedenborg's conversations with angels startle the reader with insights into the reality of the spiritual world. Conversations With Angels is an engaging, fascinating contribution to angelic studies.

Debates With Devils: What Swedenborg Heard in Hell, by Emanuel Swedenborg, Leonard Fox (Introduction), Lisa Hyatt Cooper (Translator). Emanuel Swedenborg was referred to as the "scientific saint." According to a Stanford University research team, he is one of three people (Goethe and John Stuart Mill being the others) who might have had an IQ higher than Einstein. At age 56, after a brilliant scientific career, he devoted the last 30 years of his life to spiritual meditation and mediumstic trances. In what apparently were out-of-body experiences, he conversed with numerous souls in the spirit world, including many low-level spirits. For Swedenborg, evil, hell, and the devil are synonymous. When he talks of a "devil" or a "satan," he is referring to an evil spirit or one who has chosen to turn away from God. In "Debates with Devils," Don Rose offers a compendium of what Swedenborg set forth in some 30 volumes he wrote about his findings in the spirit world. The focus in this book is on what he found in the lower realms of the spirit world. A companion book,"Conversations with Angels," focuses on the higher or heavenly realms. Hell is not literally a place of fire, as much of orthodox religion teaches. As Swedenborg saw it, it was more a fire of the mind. The souls in this state continue to love the material more than the spiritual. "In the same degree in which angels have wisdom and intelligence, infernal spirits have malice and cunning," Swedenborg wrote. These devils use their cunning to negatively influence those still living on the earthly realms. "As soon as they detect even the smallest thing that a person loves or get a scent, so to speak, of what is delightful and precious to him, they attack it instantly and try to destroy it, and so the whole person," Swedenborg wrote. Swedenborg says that hell is not God's revenge or punishment. Souls choose hell of their own free will. And yet, God permits them to climb out of hell into better states of mind.

Scribe of Heaven: Swedenborg's Life, Work, and Impact, by Stuart Shotwell (Editor), Jonathan S. Rose (Editor), Mary Lou Bertucci (Editor), George F. Dole (Editor). Scribe of Heaven introduces Emanuel Swedenborg (1688–1772) and traces the impact of his spiritual thought in the Western world. Jonathan S. Rose looks at the lush imagery of Swedenborg’s symbolism, while David Eller, Alice Skinner, Olle Hjern and Jean-François Mayer show how that imagery and symbolism influenced European and American artists and thinkers. Jane Williams-Hogan and David Eller discuss the development of Swedenborgianism as an institutionalized religion in Anglophone countries and around the world. Included are a biography of Swedenborg, an overview of his theological volumes, a review of Swedenborg’s original manuscripts and a bibliography of his works.

Divine Love and Wisdom, by Emanuel Swedenborg, George F. Dole (Translator), Gregory R. Johnson, Jonathan S. Rose, Reuben P. Bell, Glen Michael Cooper, Stuart Shotwell. In "Divine Love and Wisdom," Swedenborg reaches out to the secular mind with a vision of order and beauty pregnant with meaning and direction and appeals to human experience and reflection (rather than scriptural interpretation) in making the case for the presence of God’s love and God’s wisdom. It is not just that there is a purpose underlying creation; it is that we share in that purpose and are essential to its fulfillment. From God’s infinite love and wisdom to our own individual desires and perceptions, there is an underlying unity on which we can rely.

Divine Providence, by Emanuel Swedenborg, George F. Dole, Gregory R. Johnson, and Jonathan S. Rose. In "Divine Providence," the sequel to "Divine Love and Wisdom," the focus is directed toward earth, at a world so troubled that the loving hand of God is often hidden from our sight and brought into question. How can we believe in the goodness and power of God when we constantly see injustice and war? The answers that are offered turn us toward a deeper understanding of our own human nature and process. Only divine love and wisdom can provide us with the accountability that gives meaning to our lives.

Swedenborg's Journal of Dreams: 1743-1744, by Emanuel Swedenborg. The oldest and longest series of dreams and their analysis was recorded during a formative period in Swedenborg's life. "Journal of Dreams," with its accompanying interpretation by psychologist Wilson Van Dusen, provides an intimate view of spiritual discovery. Swedenborg is one of the first writer's to write about dreams and visions and the afterlife. Dr. Carl Jung was an avid reader of Swedenborg as were, Raplh Waldo Emerson, Elizabeth Browning and Emmanuel Kant. Swedenborg spent the last 27 seven years of his life writing his spiritual journey. He is honest, articulate and unafraid to befriend the unconscious.

On Earth As It Is In Heaven: Reflections on Jesus' Parables of the Kingdom and Emanuel Swedenborg's Heaven and Hell, by Lee Woofenden. Heaven and Hell has always been Emanuel Swedenborg's most popular book--and for good reason. Yet here we all are, living on earth, not in heaven. What good is talking about heaven if it doesn't make a difference for our lives here on earth? Jesus responds with: "On earth as it is in heaven." You can think of this book as a commentary on that one line from the Lord's Prayer. What does it mean for God's will to be done on earth as it is in heaven? What is God's will, anyway? And how do we do it here on earth? Another way of asking these questions is: How do we make earth more like heaven? In eleven reflections originally preached as sermons in the fall of 2003 at the New Jerusalem Church in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, the Rev. Lee Woofenden explores this question, drawing on Jesus' Parables of the Kingdom from the Gospel of Matthew for inspiration, and using Swedenborg's spiritual classic Heaven and Hell as a guide.

Heaven and Hell, by Emanuel Swedenborg, Bernhard Lang (Introduction), George F. Dole (Translator). The Swedenborg Foundation has done handsomely by its eponymous visionary with this first volume in a new 25 part set of translations for his of his work. They have begun with a fine new translation of Emmanuel Swedenborg's most famous work, a description of the many heavens and hells that make up the great 18th-century thinker's cosmology, at once perfectly logical and perfectly eccentric. Swedenborg's afterworld is a kind of reflection and amplification of our own, and his vision of moving and active collective of heavens, occupied by the very real blessed dead, has been a tremendous influence on Goethe, Emerson, and Jorge Luis Borges, among many others. Dole's translation has the clarity and simplicity of Swedenborg's Latin, and the notes and supplementary material are wonderfully balanced and informative. Highly recommended. Heaven and Its Wonders and Hell: Drawn from Things Heard & Seen, by Emanuel Swedenborg, George F. Dole (Translator), Bernhard Lang (Introduction), Robert H. Kirven (Editor), Jonathan S. Rose (Editor). This new, highly readable translation of Swedenborg’s most popular work restores the original power, dignity, and imagery of one of history’s most comprehensive guides to the afterlife. Swedenborg describes a merciful God who permits humans to choose heaven or hell according to their desires and natures. After death, humans retain personal identity and live in communities of like-minded souls. This book helps readers find abundant details of life in the spiritual world. Explanatory annotations and commentaries clarify meaning.
